The home side came flying out the traps in this South Region Challenge Cup-tie and by the third minute they had taken the lead thanks to a low drive from the angle by Callum Lamb.
Slack defending allowed Ross Fraser to double this advantage just two minutes later from close range then at the other end Campbell Dowie brought out a great save from Lewis Haldane.
'Normal Service' was resumed in the 9th minute though when Lamb set up Fraser to make it three and at this stage it looked as if the Hibs were going to be on the end of a record defeat.
Ruari Henry saw a shot saved by Craig Doctor but in the 24th minute the same player had another attempt deflected into the path of Lamb who made no mistake to put the Hibs four down.
Both teams had chances to find the net but there was no further scoring when the half-time whistle sounded.
Thornton performed much better in the second-half their best attempt at reducing the leeway being a Murray Black from some distance that whistled wide but the only goal came in the 82nd minute from substitute Kyle McClement who was first to react after Doctor's save landed handily for him to make it five.
