Jeanfield Swifts v Thornton Hibs

Alister Winter

East of Scotland Football League - Premier Division

Match reporter: JOHN LAING

The Hibs travelled to the Riverside Stadium in a League match for the first time since August 2015 looking to make it five wins on the trot but on this occasion Lady Luck deserted them.

Both sides came close to scoring but Macauley Jarrett and Ben Swinton (the son of a former Hibs' coach) were equal to the task however it was the Swifts who eventually took the lead in the 31st minute thanks to a Lewis Payne shot from distance that Jarrett got a hand to but the loose ball trickled over the line.

A wee while later Darren Ormiston appeared to be brought down in the box but instead of awarding the penalty the referee showed the Hibs nr 10 a yellow card for simulation with more than one spectator questioning why the player would 'dive' if he had a clear opportunity to get a shot on target.

The home side twice came close to extending their lead shortly before half-time. First a great strike from 25 yards by Christopher Scott smacked off the crossbar then a Garry Fergus attempt was saved by Jarrett.

When Cammy Muirhead doubled Jeanfield's lead in the 47th minute the game looked all over bar the shouting however just five minutes later Liam Strong brought down Campbell Dowie with the referee having no hesitation in pointing to the spot this time and Joe Kinninmonth stepped up to smack the ball home.

Then just three minutes at the back of that, Murray Black found Keir Allan who still had a bit of work to do before swapping passes with Dan McBay then smacking the ball home from the edge of the big box.

Substitute, Archie Campbell, put Jeanfield back in front in the 67th minute after being set up by Payne but it just wasn't Thornton's day as their skipper, Sean Cunningham, came close to equalising three times near the end with one header that flashed wide and another two headers that Swinton saved well to ensure it was his team that secured the three points.
