Thornton took to the field wearing black armbands then both sides observed a minute's silence as a mark of respect to former Hibs player, Bobby Philp, who passed away recently.

Penicuik took a 15th minute lead through Jack Thomson who headed home Joe Viola's corner-kick then Louis Signorini came close to doubling this advantage when he shot over from close range.

At the other end Russell Grierson's cross was met by the head of Campbell Dowie but Brandyn Bain in the visitors' goal was equal to the task.

Three minutes into the second-half the referee deemed that Keiran Herd had impeded Daryl Healy in the box but Viola failed to extend Penicuik's lead as his penalty smacked off the upright however just another three minutes later Owen Walton netted from close range to make it two.

Dowie and Sean Cunningham both came close to reducing the leeway then Macaulay Jarrett made a great save to deny Niall Kemp however Viola made amends for his penalty miss by making it three in the 79th minute.

With two minutes remaining Thomson passed the ball back to Bain but Dowie blocked his attempted clearance then guided the loose ball into the unguarded net for a consolation goal for Craig Gilbert's men.
