Both teams went into their final game of the season knowing that at least one point would be their target.
In the end it wasn't essential for the home side as results elsewhere meant they would retain First Division status but it was vital for Thornton to maintain second spot as Edinburgh South would have edged past them.
The Hibs took the lead in the 28th minute. Murray Black's shot was diverted wide for a corner-kick taken by Daniel McNab with Stuart Drummond heading past Christopher Malcolm.
And it was Drummond who doubled his side's advantage with his 10th goal of the season in the 57th minute as he cleverly clipped the ball over the out-rushing Malcolm.
It was the 68th minute when Cameron Dawson netted from the spot to reduce the leeway after the referee judged that Russell Grierson had brought down Tyler O'Neil and ten minutes at the back of that another penalty was awarded to Whitehill when the ref deemed that Lewis Rodger had impeded Dawson with Ryan Baptie finding the net.
