The last time Thornton scored three goals in one game was on 22 November last year, ironically in a 3-2 win over Edinburgh Uni. They managed it again on Saturday but unfortunately on this occasion the students proved to be far smarter!
Mason Renton got on the end of Jack Reid's pass to give the home side the lead after only two minutes but just four minutes later it was all-square with Murray Black converting Joe Kinninmonth's cross.
William Antoniuk restored the home side's lead from the spot in the 12th minute after Reid was brought down by Stuart Drummond then Reid doubled his side's advantage ten minutes later when he ran some distance unchallenged before shooting low past Macaulay Jarrett.
A Renton free-kick wide on the right somehow found its way through a ruck of players to make it four in the 29th minute before Jakey Whittle completed the first-half scoring four minutes before the interval.
Presumably strong words were exchanged in the Hibs' dressing room at half-time with it appearing to do the trick as Kinninmonth netted twice to reduce the deficit to two. First up he struck a beauty of a free-kick after Keir Allan had been brought down in the 56th minute then barely sixty seconds later he headed home Black's cross to make it 'game on'.
Or so we thought. 'Normal service' was restored just two minutes later when Cameron Forbes went on a strong run before smacking the ball into the net.
Thornton's day of woe was completed in the 66th minute after Allan was sent-off for what the referee considered to be a red card tackle.

Statto's Corner:
* Keir Allan made his 100th appearance for the Hibs, when coming on as a half-time sub, but it didn't last long as he was red-carded midway through the second period!
* The 6-3 defeat was the first time this scoreline has been recorded under Craig Gilbert (625 matches).
