In a game of few chances, Cumbernauld managed to convert a couple to ensure that they made it into the third round of the Scottish Junior Cup.
The Hibs had a great opportunity to take a second minute lead when Garry Thomson was brought down by Jamie Kennedy but Jordan Brown saved Daniel McNab's penalty kick. Just at the back of that, Brown prevented Adam Drummond's shot from counting and when play immediately moved to the other end, Fraser Team shot wide after pouncing on a poor passback.
If the supporters thought that this was setting a trend for how the rest of the game would pan out then they were surely disappointed as the only goal of the first-half came in the 13th minute when Martin Shiels' fiercly struck shot from the edge of the area gave Ryan Linton no chance.
The Hibs' best chance to even things up came in the 55th minute when Stuart Drummond, Adam Drummond and Bryan Strachan all had efforts blocked, one after the other.
Thornton were dealt a severe blow minutes later when Stuart Drummond received a second yellow that looked really harsh and more than a few supporters questioned the ability of the referee who had produced his yellow card frequently in a game that was played in a really good, sporting spirit.
Late in the game he called it correct though when Dean McMillan brought down William Wells leaving him no option but to point to the spot and this time Scott Murphy made no mistake.
