Despite taking an early lead, Thornton lost by the odd goal in three at Barnetts Park for their first midweek game of the season.
Barry Thomson was making his competitive debut for the Hibs and he was called into action in the 5th minute, making a terrific save to deny Daryl Falconer. Liam Forbes headed the visitors in front two minutes later when he got on the end of Daniel McNab's corner-kick.
Thereafter neither side came really close to scoring although Saints had more of the ball.
Thornton started the second-half much improved with four very good chances to extend their lead but they were made to pay for this profligacy when St Andrews struck two free-kicks from distance to claim the spoils. If the first in the 70th minute from Ryan McInnes, who must've been 40 yards from goal, had an element of fluke about it then there was no questioning the quality of the 35 yard strike from Craig Morison in the 81st minute that came close to bursting the net.
