This hard-earned draw was enough to send Thornton to the top of the league albeit by just one point from second-placed Kirrie who have two games in hand giving even greater significance to next Saturday's match when the pair meet at Memorial Park.
Daniel McNab gave Thornton the lead five minutes before the interval when he converted Shaun Keatings' cross, but a half-time roasting from their management saw a different Kinnoull emerge for the second-half.
Greg Whyte came close to claiming an equaliser in the 57th minute with a header that struck the post however a goal was only delayed by sixty seconds as Mark Smith's deft head-flick from Rab Kinnaird's free-kick found the back of the net. By the 64th minute, the visitors were in front thanks to Rhys Davies' penalty-kick awarded after Stuart Drummond had brought down Smith.
Drummond atoned for this by scoring the 82nd minute equaliser that keeps very much alive the Hibs' hopes of promotion.
