With Daniel McNab in irresistible form, Thornton powered to a comprehensive victory at Guthrie Park.
The opening goal came in the 16th minute when, under pressure from Garry Thomson snr, Daniel Duggan could only put the ball into his own net. Shaun Keatings doubled the Hibs' lead eight minutes later and shortly after it was three. Jimmy Shields' terrific crossfield pass found Keatings and he wasted no time in playing the ball into the path of Thomson who smashed the ball first time beyond Gary Grant.
McNab slammed home the fourth barely thirty seconds later to complete the first-half scoring.
One minute after the interval, the Hibs kept up the momentum with Chris Ireland claiming the fifth. McNab put Thornton six up in the 59th minute then really turned on the style by netting again in the 74th and 86th minutes.
