Hibs’ boss Craig Gilbert was disappointed that this team did not get more out of this East of Scotland Cup tie given the chances they created. However, it was Superleague side Linlithgow Rose that progressed to the next round despite a late scare.
Gilbert was forced into changes to the starting line-up again due to injury and the missing Garry Thomson. Linlithgow Rose’s line-up (under the stewardship of caretaker-manager Todd Lumsden) was also affected by injuries and both teams listed only three substitutes each.
Linlithgow were quick to settle and full-back Robbie McNab was first to test Matthew Clark with a shot after 12 minutes before the hosts took the lead three minutes later when Lewis Small smashed home the rebound following Tommy Coyne’s effort.
The second half saw Thornton assert some pressure on Linlithgow’s defence and just after the hour mark, Rose survived an almighty scramble in the six-yard box with the ball being cleared off the line three times.
After failing to convert their chances, it appeared it was just not going to be Thornton’s day and so it proved when Linlithgow increased their lead in the 79th minute. Kevin Kelbie slotted the ball behind the Hibs’ defence and Coyne ran on to slot the ball into the bottom corner.
If the home side thought that was the game won, they were in for a surprise. Thornton bounced back and kept creating danger but could not find the elusive touch in front of goal, including another ‘stramash’ inside the six-yard area.
With two minutes remaining, Hibs were awarded a penalty for a push in the box following a corner. Shaun Keatings took the responsibility as regular taker Chris Ireland had been substituted earlier and he stepped up to dispatch his spot-kick beyond Hill.
