Hibs got off to a perfect start in their return to the East Region North Division with a convincing win at Coupar Angus.
Chris Ireland netted in the first minute when he got on the end of a pinpoint Jimmy Shields cross to poke the ball beyond Adam Mitchell in the home goal, and this set the tone for a dominant performance from the men in green. The young Coupar Angus side struggled to break down the Hibs’ rearguard and they only tested Dean Gear in the final few minutes following the introduction of the speedy Joe Sturrock.
Hibs eventually doubled their lead six minutes from the break when Garry Thomson’s low corner was smashed beyond Mitchell from inside the six-yard area by Ireland for his second of the match. Only a superb block, shortly afterwards, from Mitchell denied Jimmy Shields after he charged forward and exchanged passes with Ireland before hitting a powerful right-foot shot.
Early in the second half, Dylan Cook had Coupar Angus’ first clear attempt at goal but he blasted over from a good position. The points were wrapped up after 69 minutes with an early contender for ‘goal of the season’. Garry Thomson picked up a loose ball around 25 yards from goal and lashed the ball into the top corner beyond the despairing Mitchell.
Dean Gear pulled off a couple of great saves in the closing minutes to deny substitute Sturrock (the first from a suspiciously offside position) and it remains a mystery how Hibs didn’t extend their lead at the death as substitutes Garry Thomson jnr and Max Coleman both had two efforts each before the ball was finally cleared. The diving save by defender Ryan Duncan in the middle of the ‘stramash’ missed by the referee may go some way to solving this mystery!
