Thornton contributed a lot to this Fife and Lothians Cup-tie but ended up going out of the tournament at Olivebank.
The Musselburgh manager had dis-respectively described this game in a newspaper as being the Hibs' cup-final and maybe this opinion was enough to give Craig Gilbert's men some additional motivation (if it was needed) because they came flying out of the blocks and deservedly went ahead in the 9th minute. Andrew Adam's free-kick was headed back across goal by Chris Ireland to the unmarked Garry Thomson who guided the ball into the net.
Andrew Adam then blasted high and wide from a good position under pressure from Alex Christie as the visitors continued to dominate.
Musselburgh slowly began to awaken from their slumbers and Liam McKenna ought to have burst the net but he put Sean Paliczka's cross over the crossbar when it looked easier to score. A daft two minutes coming up for half-time ended up costing the Hibs dearly. In the 37th minute Steven Thomson's free-kick from wide on the right struck the far upright and the ball rebounded kindly for Scott Gibson who smashed the ball low into the net. By the 39th minute the game had turned on its head when Jed Davie's well controlled volley from 16 yards flashed into the net giving Matthew Clark no chance.
Just before the interval, McKenna was sent-off for a second-yellow card offence, a decision that the Musselburgh man thought was unjust.
Instead of being a hindrance this appeared to work in Musselburgh's favour as Thornton struggled to break them down.
Jack Wilson had a couple of sizzling efforts and Mathew Gay watched a header smack off the front of the crossbar but the only other goal came in the 76th minute at the other end when, following a clever interpassing move, Jack Wright slid the ball home.
