Dundonald Bluebell v Thornton Hibs

John Laing15 Apr 2019 - 15:47

East Region Premier League

First things first – Both sets of players should be thoroughly congratulated for putting on such a great show in dreadful weather. But the Hibs' men were absolutely spewin' following a stoppage time winner from Callum Young after putting so much into a game and ending up with the sum total of hee-haw.

With the strong wind behind their backs, Thornton belied their bottom spot in the league by taking the game to their opponents and came close to going ahead a few times before, totally against the run of play, Ben Anthony dashed up the right flank and his low cross was perfect for Jamie Gilfillan to give Dundonald an 18th minute lead.

There's a well known phrase in football that a team's at its most vulnerable just after they've scored and it was most certainly the case this time as within seconds of the re-start Chris Ireland rifled the ball beyond James Lennox to level affairs.

Daniel McNab came close to putting the Hibs ahead with a vicious strike from outside the area that slammed off the outside of the post but he was to have a big say in the goal that eventually gave the visitors a 27th minute lead. He played a one-two with Chris Ireland near the half-way line then went on a mesmerising run that left numerous Bluebell players in his wake. As McNab broke into the box he was impeded by Stewart McDonald leaving the referee with no option but to point to the spot. Ireland took the penalty in impudent style as he dinked the ball over the sprawling Lennox a la Anton Panenka.

In the second-half there were chances at both ends before Gilfillan netted his second in the 62nd minute after being put through by Aiden Hendry.

With two minutes remaining, Mark Rowbotham made an outstanding save to deny Ben Anthony but he was powerless to prevent Callum Young snatching the winner deep into 'Fergie time'.
