Dalkeith came from two down to snatch a last gasp winner after 5:00pm on Saturday evening as this game kicked off 49 minutes late when the visitors failed to arrive on time because of road works at the Forth Bridge.
Because both of their goalkeepers were unavailable, a schoolboy trialist wore the Hibs no1 jersey and it was thanks to his terrific save from David Liddle in the 15th minute that the game remained goal-less.
Thornton took the lead in the 42nd minute through Chris Ireland who followed up to smash the ball into the net after Shaun Smith had got a big hand to Daniel McNab's ferocious strike. Ireland doubled his and the Hibs tally right on half time when he showed great tenacity to get the better of Tadg Moriarty before stabbing the ball low into the net.
Dalkeith pulled one back in the 55th minute when Thomas Waters free kick from wide on the right was somehow missed by everyone and ended with the ball creeping in at the far post.
After Bryan Strachan brought down Waters in the box, Moriarty netted from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to draw the visitors level and then 4 minutes into stoppage time with quite literally the last kick of the game, Paul Tansey's cross from the left fell in at the back post to earn Dalkeith all three points.
