Although Jack Small in the Star goal took a sore one in the early stages of this game, he surely won’t enjoy such a quiet Saturday afternoon – indeed at one stage during the first-half he got one of his mates to go and get him a Mars Bar!
And yet it was the Hibs’ defender, Jimmy Shields, who almost broke the deadlock with a glancing header that slipped past the outside of the post.
Star took the lead in the 24th minute when Sean Simpson brilliantly scored direct from a free-kick and the second ‘killer’ goal came two minutes into first-half stoppage time from Gavin Gray who never gave the Hibs’ defence a minute’s peace all afternoon.
George Field made it three in the 52nd minute and in added time at the end of the game, Simpson netted his second from the penalty spot.
