With both teams’ scheduled fixtures postponed at East Craigie and Forfar Albion, a league game at Memorial Park was hastily arranged.
And it was the team from The Lang Toun who benefited from this as their young players worked tirelessly to fully merit their victory.
There were few goalscoring opportunities in the first-half with the only points of note being Kirkcaldy’s Ryan Robertson header striking the crossbar and then on the stroke of half-time, the visitors’ goalie, Steven Macrae, made a top drawer save to prevent Adam Drummond’s header from finding the back of the net.
Kirkcaldy took the lead in the 54th minute when Daniel Watt had time to choose his spot and it could’ve been 2-0 in the 66th minute but for an absolutely blinding point-blank save by Mark Rowbotham from Ryan Robertson.
This was only putting off the inevitable though as Andy Healy’s side got their second two minutes later when Watt’s low ball across the face of goal was inadvertently knocked into his own goal by the helpless Nicky McGowan.
Ryan Robertson’s 82nd minute penalty, awarded after McGowan had impeded Watt in the area, struck the post and this miss might’ve proved crucial as the Hibs came close on a few occasions but there was to be no cigars until deep into stoppage time when Jimmy Shields headed home Daniel McNab’s corner-kick for his first goal in a Thornton jersey since March 2009.
