Thornton Hibs v Luncarty

John Laing16 Apr 2019 - 14:09

East Region North Division

Hibs’ supporters who are ‘glass half empty’ guys could only talk about the way their favourites conceded two sloppy late goals. ‘Half full’ supporters, on the other hand, preferred to talk up the more positives from the game such as defeating one of the championship favourites, scoring four goals in the process; 18 years old Raymond Crichton doing well in an unaccustomed right back position; Chris Ireland’s terrific diving header; Mathew Gay’s header for the opener from Andy Adam’s perfect free-kick; sixteen years old Jack Wilson coming on as a second-half substitute and not looking out of place.

Gay’s header came in the third minute and Craig Gilbert’s men perhaps should’ve extended the lead most notably when goal-scoring opportunities fell to Andrew Adam and Stevie Leslie but it wasn’t until the 35th minute when Garry Thomson raced clear and stroked the ball under the advancing Mark Mitchell that the lead was doubled.

The Bleachers began the second-half in more determined fashion but the Hibs defence stood firm although they were a wee bit fortunate in the 67th minute when Scott Finlay’s cross from the right bounced on top of the crossbar. Within a minute of this, Chris Ireland netted from the spot after Alex Whytock dumped Garry Thomson in the box and then Ireland’s brilliant diving header from his strike partner, Stevie Leslie’s, cross put Thornton four up in the 71st minute.

Just as it looked as if the Hibs would see out a comfortable win, John Anderson pulled one back with five minutes remaining and then Scott Finlay scored another in the last minute to make the scoreline look a wee bit more respectable for the Perhshire men.
