Goals from Kris Maxwell and Ryan McNeil – his first for the club – earned Thornton Hibs all three points from this dour encounter.
Mathew Gay came close to scoring the opener with a shot from 15 yards that struck the outside of the post but the Hibs went on to take the lead on the half hour mark. As Adam Drummond attempted to go round Ryan Welsh just inside the box, the Shipbuilders’ full back handled the ball and for his efforts he was shown a second yellow card leaving his team a man down for an hour. Kris Maxwell took the penalty and although Calum Brodie managed to get something on the ball, the Hibs’ skipper had struck it so hard that it spun up and into the corner of the net.
As so often happens when a team goes a man down, the visitors upped the ante and twice Mark Rowbotham came to his side’s rescue with great saves.
The Hibs’ second goal came in the 71st minute when, after Lee White saw two shots blocked, the ball fell to Ryan McNeil who showed how it’s done by rattling the ball low into the net.
