The curtain came down on the Hibs’ 2012/13 season on Wednesday night, and this game highlighted just why they ended it with a goal difference of –17. Rosyth cut through their defence like a hot knife through butter at times and they fully deserved to take all three points.
A defensive error allowed Sean Johnstone to put the visitors ahead in the 28th minute and criminally, straight from kick-off, the Hibs gave away possession and seconds later Alan McDonough doubled Rosyth's tally.
The same man made it three just before the interval to give the Hibs a second-half mountain to climb.
Mathew Gay’s first goal of the season in the 56th minute gave Thornton some hope, but it was game over just four minutes later when McDonough completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Lewis Hamil was brought down in the area.
