Thornton Hibs didn’t play badly but this was like so many games last season when defensive frailties cost them dear.
The Jeanies took the lead in the 5th minute when Mike Wilson spilled Stevie McAllister’s shot and Tony Holt smashed the ball into the net. Paddy Deane headed the second in the 37th minute and two minutes later, Holt claimed his second from the penalty spot after John Anderson had been downed in the area.
Adam Drummond threw the Hibs a lifeline just before the interval when he converted from the spot after John Halley’s shot had struck Aaron Whitehead’s arm.
Early in the second-half, Mark Gordon came close to extending the visitors’ lead but Wilson made a good save to keep the deficit to two. He was powerless though to prevent John Anderson from netting number four in the 65th minute.
The Hibs wouldn’t lie down and deservedly pulled a goal back six minutes later. Chris Ireland unselfishly squared the ball for Garry Thomson. Before he could get to it, Whitehead knocked the ball into his own goal although he was only doing what Thomson would’ve done anyway.
With two minutes remaining, Jeanfield substitute, Robbie Holden, worked an opening before sending in a good shot. Although Wilson got a hand to the ball it wasn’t enough to stop the ball from trickling over the line.
