Thornton dished out six of the best on Saturday as they strode into the quarter-finals of the Fife and Lothians Cup. The man who did most damage was Adam Drummond whose hat-trick had the Hibs three up by the 36th minute.
His first goal came with just two minutes on the clock. Kris Maxwell was brought down 20 yards out and Drummond’s well struck free-kick was perfectly placed just inside Chris Lowe’s post to give Craig Gilbert’s team the perfect start. And things got even better for the home side in the 21st minute when Lowe brought down Andrew Adam leaving Drummond to net from the resultant penalty.
Another terrific free-kick from Drummond had the Hibs three up and then just before the interval, Lee White smashed the ball home from outside the area to give Thornton a four goal half-time lead.
The response from Haddington was to make a triple substitution before the game could re-start but by then the damage was done.
In the 53rd minute, Chris Ireland struck a sensational shot from 25 yards to make it five and it seemed like the scorers were trying to outdo each other with regards to the quality of their goals.
Eight minutes later, Ireland turned provider as he headed Lee White’s throw-in to Coco Mullen who headed home from close range.
One of the Hi-Hi’s substitutes, Sean Jamieson, pulled one back and the visitors had another opportunity to score again when the Hibs’ ‘keeper, Mark Rowbotham, brought down Jack Wilson. Rowbotham atoned for this, though, by brilliantly saving Jordan Cropley’s well-placed penalty-kick.
