Luncarty v Thornton Hibs

John Laing8 May 2019 - 07:28

Central Division

As a group of Thornton supporters left for Luncarty, the new Amy Winehouse single, ‘Our Day Will Come’, came on the car radio. After the Hibs’ uninspiring start to the season, it was questioned if this would be a good omen. And it was – eventually!

Craig Gilbert’s men got off to the perfect start when Kris Maxwell found the net with barely sixty seconds on the clock. Tenacious play by Maxwell in the 22nd minute saw him get the better of his opponent and he played in Coco Mullen. Mullen unselfishly rolled the ball into the path of Andrew Adam who lashed the ball home from 10 yards.

This put the Hibs on easy street – or so we thought. Within a minute, though, Thornton’s lead was reduced to one when Mark Caldow shot past Mark Rowbotham then just before half-time, Caldow netted again to level the game.

In the 59th minute, Thornton took the lead once more. This time a great pass from Chris Gay sent Andrew Adam on a left wing dash. His shot beat Gordon McGilviray but not the post. Luckily the ball ran straight back to Adam and this time he fired it low across the goalmouth for Harris Moyes to stab home. Surely this time, the Hibs wouldn’t give up their lead. Wrong!!

Ten minutes later, Caldow struck from the penalty spot after Mike McAinsh was penalised for a handball and then in the 77th minute, Caldow buried another spot-kick, awarded after Craig Hall brought down Scott Peletier.

Unbelievably, this topsy turn game twisted in Hibs favour once more as substitute, Lee White, scored twice in the following two minutes to put the visitors back in front. His first came from another Andrew Adam cross and shortly after he headed Adam’s corner-kick into the top corner of the goal.

There were no more goals but only a blinding point blank save late in the game from Rowbotham prevented Luncarty from salvaging a point.

These welcome three points allowed the Hibs to leapfrog Luncarty, Rosyth, Steelend and Newburgh but spare a thought for Mark Caldow who scored four goals and ended up on a losing side.

Luncarty: McGilviray, McCulloch, McCabe, Meehan, Wilkie, Hunter, Wilson, Fairlie, Caldow, Mackain, Lafferty. Subs: Angus, Goodwillie, Hampton, Henderson, Baillie, McLean, Peletier.

Referee: Mr K.Graham
