There's a saying in football that the league table doesn't lie and this was certainly the case on Wednesday night as St Andrews proved to be worthy champions, playing the best stuff that Thornton have come up against all season. Having said that, the Hibs contributed to their own downfall with some pitiful defending that allowed Saints to go in four up at the interval.
Ironically, Thornton could've taken the lead but Scott Bennett saved well from Ross Morgan and from the rebound, Morgan's second effort was cleared off the line.
A breakdown in communication in the Hibs' defence gifted the 21st minute opener to Ryan Suttie. In the 36th minute, Gary Sutherland's looping header made it two and this looked like being the end of the scoring of the first-half, however, the game was effectively all over in the last minute of the first-half. Sutherland headed Saints' third then within thirty seconds of this, Sean Muhsin won possession then ran on and lashed the ball beyond the Hibs' trialist 'keeper.
Although Saints continued to play the better football in the second-half, it's to the Hibs' credit that they battled hard in the second-half and were unlucky not to find the net on at least one occasion.
