That's twice now that Thornton Hibs have visited Warout this season. The first time they lost out by the odd goal in five in the ACA Sports League Cup. This time round the teams shared six goals. At the end of a week when the parking of imaginary busses had been discussed at great length, it was refreshing to see two teams just go out and try to win a game!!
There were a number of positives for the Hibs to take from this game. The biggest one, obviously, was that they picked up their first league point of the season; Davie Muir returned to the fold as the club's sports injury therapist; They scored their first league goals from open play; Mike McAinsh returned from injury to make his first appearance of the season after coming on as a first-half substitute; They finished the game with eleven men on the park; And did I mention that Davie Muir had returned to the club as Sports Injury Therapist?!!
Prior to kick-off, the teams observed a minute's silence as a mark of respect following the passing away of Glenrothes' coach, John McAndrew's mother.
Only two minutes were on the clock when the Hibs took the lead. Coco Mullen raced onto a long pass from John Halley. As he was poised to pull the trigger, Glenrothes' veteran defender, Craig Gibson, illegally prevented him from getting his shot in and the referee had no hesitation in pointing towards the spot. The captain, Ian Hepburn, stepped forward and found the back of the net from the spot for the second week on the trot. This lead only lasted three minutes though. Lee Duffy's whipped in free-kick not too far from the byeline grazed the top of Jimmy Shields' head and flashed into the net at the near post.
Duffy was the best man on the park and he came close to putting Glenrothes back in front but Kevin Smith collected his attempt at the second go.
Duffy came even closer with a brilliant strike from outside the area that struck the underside of the bar before being cleared by Ian Hepburn.
John Paul Burns' measured chip from 30 yards was arguably even better but the former Hibs' player of the year, Craig Danks, was equal to the task and did superbly well to tip the ball over.
Ex-Glenrothes' player, John Halley, scored with a header the last time the teams met and he repeated this feat by getting on the end of Andrew Adam's cross to give the Hibs a 35th minute lead.
This lead lasted until the 43rd minute when John Martin restored parity. Before the referee could sound his half-time whistle, Thornton went in front for the third time. John Halley sent in a free-kick from the right that Coco Mullen got his head to. Somehow the ball trickled into the back of the net but in a season when the Hibs haven't experienced much luck they were happy to accept this piece of good fortune.
In the second-half, the Hibs' defence didn't quite have to put up with non stop pressure from Glenrothes but there's no doubt the home side held the upper hand for large periods of the game. It wasn't until the 81st minute though, that Sam Buchan blasted an equaliser with the Hibs' defence appealing in vain for offside. Coco Mullen might've stolen all three points two minutes at the back of that but Danks made a breathtaking stop to ensure that the spoils were shared.
